The Right Wedding Dj When a bride and groom make the decision to walk down the isle the plans for the perfect reception are underway. Brides have a picture in their head of what exactly it is that they want to happen at the ceremony and at the reception. The Flowers have to be just right, the décor must fit their personality and most importantly everyone has to have a good time. Unfortunately, 6 months after the reception is over nobody is going to remember what colors the flowers were or what kind of Champaign they had, but they are going to remember if they had fun! Every disc jockey service has the obligation to provide the customer with several items as a creditable wedding service provider. The first and most important item is the amount of attention needed to insure that every detail and concern that the bride and groom have is addressed. They should take the time to meet with the bride after the bride and groom thought out their wedding reception plans or filled in a provided planner, this way the DJ knows exactly what the couple expects. I have seen a number of very unacceptable practices including handing a bride a "fill in the blank and mail it back to us form" without any face to face contact. Additionally, the bride and groom should be in complete control of the reception. This includes rearranging traditions, requesting music types and requesting that some songs not be played. If the service is not willing to structure the reception to fit a clients specific need, then keep looking for another service. The DJ should be available for viewing in a place other then another clients wedding reception and Wedding photography. If a DJ says he or she does not do public shows then ask where you can come to see the DJ perform. Most customers do not want several strangers wandering around their reception watching the DJ perform and in most cases DJs do not make these visits known in advance. A disc jockey service should be comprehensive enough to handle your guests requests if you want them to do so. Ask for a play list, hit list, or examples of music types. The service should have a list available to give you an idea of the diversity of their library. Look for current hits as well as standard favorites and oldies. The next thing is what I call "nickel and dimeing" If the service charges extra for incidentals. I have seen services charge an extra $200 for lighting, $50 for a wireless Microphone, and $35 for a smoke machine. All of a sudden that competitive price that the service quoted you on the phone is $300 more then what they said. Look for an all-inclusive package, a true professional runs his or her business with a code of ethics and does not try to up-sell on something that they know is a necessity to you to make the evening special. The final thing is the huge deposit, any service should not charge more then 33% as a deposit, and under no circumstances pay the DJ the total amount due before the day of the show. It is customary for a DJ to collect at the beginning of the reception however never pay them off until you see them set up in the hall. This will insure you that he or she will perform on time, dressed appropriately, and in the manor you agreed upon. The DJ is a very important factor to the atmosphere of your reception, make sure your wedding dress is fitted right for and dancing that will take place and select a DJ that is willing to work with you as well as for you. |
