Invitation ComponentsThe outer envelope can be lined or unlined, and is large enough to hold all the items that go in it. Basically it protects the contents within. Additional postage may be necessary if the envelope is large or if many items are included, so check the weight and size of your invitations with the post office. Be sure the address and names on the envelope match those on the invitations inside before sealing. The inner envelope is usually lined, and can be lined with colored paper of your choice (the color scheme of your wedding if you know it). The inner envelope is never sealed, and contains all the other components of a wedding invitation. This is the envelope that is usually addressed in a more decorative manner. This also serves as a souvenir for the recipients. Please note: Inner envelopes are not really necessary, it is only for added protection of the contents. It is perfectly acceptable to use only one envelope. In that case, the single envelope is usually lined, and of course sealed. The invitation can be an expression of your personal style and formality of your wedding. It can be in a traditional style, although today there is more acceptance of a less traditional invitation. Choose or design one that you both like or agree on. The wedding invitation may also ask guests to attend your reception as well as your wedding ceremony. If not, then also see the reception card. The reception card is only necessary if you haven't already asked in the wedding invitations. This card is enclosed with the wedding invitation, and goes into the inner envelope. If you invite fewer people to the reception than to the ceremony, remember to put the reception card into the appropriate envelopes! The directions card or sheet contains verbal directions, and/or have a map depiction of how to get to the location of the wedding and/or reception. This is placed with the invitation for the convenience of the guests, and is a courteous and friendly touch for those unfamiliar with the area. The response card and self-stamped envelope are not traditional, but can be very helpful to ensure that you receive more replies from guests, especially with today's busy schedules. People are more likely to check off a yes/no box and write their names on a response card than to compose a formal response. Remember to put the correct postage on the response envelope.
